Understanding Relationship Patterns

Patterns can feel personal and automatic
You may notice that certain conversations quickly become familiar: withdrawing, over-explaining, becoming defensive, or trying to keep the peace at your own expense.
These responses often developed for a reason. They may once have helped you stay safe, connected, or accepted.
Curiosity changes the conversation
Instead of asking, "What is wrong with me?", it can be more useful to ask, "What is this response trying to protect?"
That question does not excuse harmful behaviour, but it can help you understand the emotional logic underneath it.
Counselling can slow the pattern down
In therapy, we can look at what happens before, during, and after a repeated relationship pattern. With time, you may find more room to respond rather than react.
